Dr David Borthwick reveals the hidden history and folklore surrounding the humble Barnacle Goose (Branta leucopsis).  A lecturer in Environmental Literature at the University of Glasgow’s School of Interdisciplinary Studies in Dumfries, he will talk about a bird whose presence is ubiquitous in winter along the Solway coast.  He will examine the rich heritage of this winter migrant to Scotland, taking in sources from the 13th century to the present, and will question what we can learn today from such a charismatic goose.
